15 Ways To Get Rid of Cold Sores

Cold sores are the symptom of the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), which are painful fluid-filled small blisters (lesions, bubbles or pockets) that appear in around lips, nose and outer edges of mouth.

All most all the adults test positive for this virus already living in the body, but only some will show symptoms. The blisters may be with a fever, sore throat, headache and pain. About 50% of children by the age of 10 have the virus that causes cold sores.

It is important to take measures to prevent the virus from becoming active. The cold sores can be triggered by stress, fever, illness, hormonal fluctuations, surgery or even sun exposure. This virus gets activated when the body's immune system becomes weak. Cold sores may appear after cold or flu, fevers, stress, fatigue, injury to the lips or during menstruation.

The symptoms usually last for 10-12 days, but the experience during those days may be horrible. You may calm down the pain or shorten the duration of cold sores using natural treatments and home remedies.

1. Toss your toothbrush

As soon as you see the first signs of blisters, through away your toothbrush as
your toothbrush becomes a carrier of the virus, and that will trigger an outbreak of cold sores. Start using your brushing with a new toothbrush once you are free of any blisters.

2. Don't Ever Touch

The cold sores are so contagious that even touching your sore and then rubbing somewhere on your body like on nose or eyes, could cause them to spread. So resist touching the sores. if you accidentally touch them, wash your hands thoroughly.

3. Apply Ice

Ice can ease the discomfort and inflammation of cold sores. Apply ice on the sores for five to ten minutes several times at their start. This will prevent the movement of the virus so it will control their further development, keeping the size of sores small.

4. Lemon Balm

Lemon balm may help in the healing of a blister and prevent future outbreaks.
Apply a lip balm containing lemon balm on the sores. You can also drink a lemon balm tea by adding a few leaves of lemon balm in boiling water.

5. Apply A Milk Pack

Putting a whole milk compress on your sore can help speed up the healing, and ease pain. Milk contains immunoglobulins proteins, which fight and prevent herpes virus. It also contains l-lysine which helps speed up the healing of blisters.

Drinking whole milk may stop the occurrence of cold sores and prevent future flare-ups.  You can take Lysine supplement or in cream form.

Make a whole milk compress by soaking a cotton ball in milk and apply it on the cold sore for several minutes. to soothe the pain and fight off the virus and finally to get rid of cold sores.

6. Tea Bag Therapy

Tea is not only a healthy drink due to its antioxidant properties, but the tannic acid in it has antiviral properties. Put a warm tea bag on the cold sore for 10-15 minutes. This will prevent further development of sores and will heal them and cure them in a few days.

7. Advantage of Coconut Oil width Tea Tree Oil or Carbolic Acid

Coconut oil have  anti-viral and antibacterial properties due to the presence of Lauric acid. Carbolic acid and tea tree oil are antiseptic and disinfect the sore.
Mix the following and keep in a bottle.

Coconut oil or olive oil: 100 ml,
Dettol : 1 ml,
Carbolic acid or tea tree Oil: 1 ml

Apply this mixture on your sores once or twice to get rid off them quickly. This formula is so effective that you will see the results in 1-2 applications.
This mixture has a very high success rate, not only for cold sores but also for boils, mosquito bites, itching at under arms, between the thighs, anus, etc. You can keep this bottle for years to treat such conditions. This is a good home remedy for herpes.

8. Witch Hazel Remedy

Witch Hazel is a great astringent, it prevents further spread of the cold sore virus. The leaves and bark of witch hazel have been used for insect bites, acne, bruises, blisters and cold sores.
Get a bottle of witch hazel, or witch hazel hydrosol from your Chemist. Soak a cotton pad in it and apply directly on your sore and leave for some time. Repeat 1-2 times daily until you get rid of sores.

9. Cure With Common Salt

Moisten your finger and press it on powdered salt and then on to the cold sores for about half a minute. Do it 2-3 times a day for 2-3 days.

10. Hydrogen Peroxide Wipes

Hydrogen peroxide is an effective disinfectant which can clean the sores and speed up the healing.
Soak a cotton ball in hydrogen peroxide and apply on to your sores for a few seconds and then rinse.

11. Peppermint oil

Peppermint oil can kill simplex virus particles around an erupted cold sore.
Dip a cotton piece in water and then dip it into the peppermint oil to dilute it. Wipe the sores 2-3 times daily until cured.

12. Sage Herbal Tea

Make a tea by adding two or three sage leaves and a small ginger piece to a cup of boiling water. Drink 2-3 cups a day.

13. The Power of Essential Oils

Essential oils like grape seed, grapefruit seed and tea tree oil combined with Aloe Vera, sage, chamomile and witch hazel have healing powers and can relieve sufferings with cold sores.

Grapefruit seed oil make the virus harmless, the chamomile can reduce inflammation and the tea tree oil is used to disinfect the sore.

Mix essential oil in water or Aloe vera, sage or chamomile in 1:8 ratio and apply with a cotton dab on the sores.

14. Control the Spread

Herpes simplex is highly contagious, so if if one member in family is having sores, then you have to prevent it to spread.
  1. Wash your hands with soap after touching the cold sores.
  2. Keep the cups, plates, towels, etc. separate for someone with cold sores.
  3. Keep the razors, towels or utensils separate for someone with cold sores.
  4. Avoid skin-to-skin contact.
  5. Avoid kissing or with aperson having cold sores.
  6. Replace your toothbrush after an attack.
  7. Use a sunscreen of  15 SPF or more on your lips and other susceptible areas.

15. Prevention Is Important

Don't wait for the herp virus to become active. You should take measures to prevent the virus from becoming active.

The virus is activated when the body's immune system becomes poor, generally after cold, flu, fever, fatigue, stress or during menstruation. Injury to the lips, excessive sun exposure, very hot drinks and foods can also trigger the sores. So it is good to avoid them, besides you aim to strengthen your immune and nervous systems to keep your body healthy.
