Why do teeth get yellow?
What causes the teeth to become yellow. While your genetics may be one cause, there are other factors that play a part.

Not practicing oral hygiene is a major cause of getting yellowing teeth. Improper brushing and not flossing contribute to oral problems including cavities, gum problems, teeth sensitivity and yellow teeth.

The kind of food and drink you consume, especially dark drinks, such as coke and coffee stain the stain the enamel of your teeth. Over-consumption of these foods break down the enamel, revealing the yellow dentin underneath.

Following are natural ways to make your teeth white. The Do It Yourself (DIY) whitening using baking soda, coconut oil and a small amount of hydrogen peroxide in moderation can make an effect.

Apple cider vinegar has natural whitening properties and also it can kill bad bacteria building on your gums. Using it over a few weeks can make a difference.

Gargle with dilute apple cider vinegar (half teaspoon of apple cider vinegar solution to a cup of water) everyday in the morning as a mild mouth rinse to help to remove stains and whiten your teeth. Avoid swallowing it.

Using apple cider vinegar in combination with baking soda improves the results.

Mix two parts apple cider vinegar to one part baking soda and gargle a few times a week,

2. Coconut Oil Pulling

Rinsing your mouth with cold pressed oil is an old remedy to help whiten teeth. This method is known as ‘oil pulling. The reason is that lauric acid in coconut oil has stain-decreasing properties, and can remove bacteria, parasites and toxins from your teeth that can make them yellow.

Before you brush your teeth in the morning, take a spoonful of coconut or olive oil in your mouth and swish it around vigorously and also ‘pull’ it through your teeth. After 10-15 minutes spit the oil out, rinse with water, and brush your teeth with your normal toothpaste.

The coconut oil is safer to use daily than baking soda-based whiteners.
It should be noted that further research is required in support of coconut oil on oral health and bacteria.

Like apple cider vinegar, it's not an immediate solution, so using it over time will have the best effect.

3. Baking Soda

Baking Soda is used in many of the popular toothpastes because it is mildly abrasive, so its scrubbing effect removes stains on the teeth, giving them a whiter shade. Baking soda  releases free radicals that break down stain-causing molecules on tooth enamel.

I brush my teeth with baking soda before brushing with my normal paste, 2-3 days in a week. This way, I keep my teeth stains free.

Note: Excessive use of baking soda can break down your enamel over time, causing sensitivity in your teeth.

4. Teeth Whitening Paste using Hydrogen Peroxide - Baking Soda

Mix about two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and one tablespoon of baking soda in some toothpaste. Brush teeth for about a minute and then rinse. Repeat only 2-3 times in a week.

Use a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution as a mouth rinse every night for a brighter smile.

Note: Do not use a concentration more than 3% of hydrogen peroxide solution.

5. Using Turmeric

The turmeric is abrasive and has astringent properties. There are some studies using turmeric to lighten teeth.

Make a turmeric paste by mixing 2 teaspoon turmeric powder to 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon coconut oil. Brush with this paste.

This paste works about as well as using baking soda, but it will stain your toothbrush, and also turns your teeth yellow while brushing and a great effort to rinse your mouth clear.

6. Stay Away From These Food

Acidic Solutions: Stay away from any homemade solution based on citrus like lemon, orange or strawberry because the acid in these fruits can break down and harm your enamel. This will make your teeth sensitive.

Chewable vitamin C tablets are acidic and are a hazard for children's and adult's teeth.

Coffee, soda pop, and tea can all do some damage to your smile. Keep away from foods very dark in color which can probably stain your teeth.

7. Scrub Your Smile With Chewing Food

Crunchy fruits like apples, broccoli, carrots, celery and cucumbers act as both toothbrushes and bacteria destroyers so these are all healthy ways to scrub your smile.

The more you chew them, the more your mouth builds up saliva, which helps to fight the build up of bacteria in your mouth.

How Effective Are These Whitening Remedies

The home treatments will show the improvement in your teeth whiteness slowly. These remedies do not guarantee perfectly white teeth as the commercial products do. But one thing is certain, by the natural methods, you will have a healthier mouth and feel better and confident. So, it is better to make a habit to use them regularly.

Daily brushing and flossing with a regular visit to your regular dentist is the best way to maintain a healthy bright smile.
